Creating Realistic Landscapes with Kay Haerland
Saturday & Sunday, 13 and 14 September 2008, 9.30-4pm
This fun workshop will teach you Kay's step-by-step approach to designing and making a realistic landscape quilt. Working with a small format of approximately 45x35 cm, you will learn key techniques and concepts for design, assembly and embellishment.

Working with a selection of Kay's pre-made designs, you will learn to create and use paper templates for selecting and cutting fabric layers. We will spend time with fabric selection and learn to use different machine appliqué and stitching techniques to achieve realistic effects. We will also start adding foreground features.

Kay will demonstrate the use of perspective and you will learn to give realism and life to your quilt by adding additional natural features such as trees, shrubs, rocks etc. as well as more detail, using different embellishment techniques. A number of options will be demonstrated and discussed, so you can explore these techniques in the workshop or on your own in future quilt projects.

To benefit from this class, you should be experienced with the basic process of piecing and finishing a quilt, and be familiar with your sewing machine, including the blind hem stitch. Free motion machine stitching experience would help, but is not a must.

Fibonacci with Amanda Daly
Sunday, 19 October 2008, 10am - 4pm, Guild Office-Sydney

Amanda discovered Fibonacci number sequencing and the golden rectangle a few
years ago and was immediately fascinated. Photographers, architects and
artists use it to create good proportion and balance in their work and it's
a great tool for quilt designers.

After much research Amanda now bases most of her quilt design on this very easy
system. She says she is mathematically challenged but it's easy to understand how using this simple number sequence can help create better harmony and balance
within a quilt.

Whether you like traditional or contemporary quilts, Fibonacci number
sequencing will make a positive difference to your quilt designs. If you don't
design your own quilts you'll be able to use the information to slightly
rearrange the proportions in the quilt patterns you use, to create a more
aesthetically pleasing quilt.
